Origin
Spark
In
the Spring of 2015, a friend who had worked with me on
Ariel
and The Littlest Cthulhuist,
was preparing to start on her first film project and had asked my if
she could borrow my lighting kit. I was, of course, happy to help her
out. So, we met for dinner at a local restaurant so she could pick
it up.
When
she started telling me about her project I was surprised to find out
that she had not finished the screenplay...and she was shooting that
weekend. She had some ideas about doing something about sleep
paralysis but nothing defined. We talked about various things she
could do and I even drew up a quick storyboard for her.
Well,
the thought of her not having a screenplay worried me greatly. I had
done a few short films and had seen first hand how planning is so
crucial. I felt compelled to help her any way I could. The next
morning I sat down and wrote out a quick screenplay called La
Cauchemar so she would have something.
As
it turned out, she was able to pull it together and produced a
brilliant short, experimental film. She ended up not using much of what I had written for her which,
in hindsight, was a good thing because she made that film in her own
voice. I was very impressed. It was edgy and creepy and, honestly,
better than some of my first film endeavors.
Since she had not use much of what I had written, I decide to produce it
myself. Later, the name of the film was changed from La
Cauchemar
to The
Princess in Yellow.
